Counselling for TCKs

Third Culture Kids, TCKs, Cross-Culture kids, CCKs... More children now grow up between worlds as "global citizens," spending their lives moving countries or even moving between cultures within one place. Third-culture kids (TCKs) are those whose parents may come from one nation (or more), are living in another nation different to their parent's passport, and yet belong fully to neither of those two places or cultures. One example could be a child with a Dutch mother and a Venezuelan father, living in Iceland. These children grow up creating a third culture--one that's not quite the same as their parents'--yet also not the same of their host country. Cross-culture kids (CCKs) may have a parent from one nation and another from a different nation, and move back and forth between cultures in their own home. CCKs are also those who, as an example, may come from a family of Chinese immigrants--at school they go about life speaking English in their western culture, while at home they speak Chinese with their extended family and follow a different set of rules of living and interacting. The term, "Third-Culture Kid" can include CCKs as they are also growing up in a third culture of their own.

At Found Counselling, while no one person understands another fully, we do understand some of the nuances of growing up between geographical locations and societal rules. Military families have chosen to serve and sacrifice for their countries, and often shift from post to post every two years or so. Other base families become extended family, and sometimes get to serve on the same bases at the same time more than once. More often, they do not. However, they have military family all over the world. Military kids have a unique life experience, often spending significant amounts of time growing up without one parent, and can be supported through counselling.

We love MKs! Whichever part of the world you are in, we want to support your MKs as they go through significant developmental changes--even as they are growing in their life with the Lord and their families. We understand the often unique love of their host country, even while possibly missing many important family events and relationships from their passport country. Diplomat kids may seem to have a "wow" lifestyle to those on the outside, but they go through many shifts and changes, learning languages, learning customs, making new friends, only to have to say goodbye what often feels like sooner rather than later. At the same time, they are full of resilience and grit, gaining a more rounded view of the world through their life experiences and building networks around the world. We can help diplomat kids with adjustment to new places and the emotions of all that life brings, whether unique to this lifestyle or just a part of normal growing up.
